To the Editor:

On behalf of all members of the Durham Fire Department, I extend a hearty WELCOME to incoming first-year students. We know fire safety is nothing new to you, but you are living in a new place which will not be as familiar, especially in a fire. Each residence hall is protected by an automatic fire detection system that is connected directly to the Durham Fire Department. This equipment cannot be damaged, altered or otherwise compromised by anyone. UNH and the Durham Fire Department take all fire alarms seriously; you should too. Please take the time now to locate two exits on your floor. Count how many doors and in which direction you would need to go from your dorm room to reach the exit doorway. Take fire alarms seriously -WE DO! Anytime the fire alarm is activated you should immediately move to the closest exit and leave the building. No person is to re-enter a building until the fire department advises it's safe to do so. The following list is intended to assist you in making safe decisions about your dorm room: • Do not prop fire doors open at anytime • Keep exit paths open at all times • NO SMOKING: UNH strictly prohibits smoking inside any university residence facility. Smoking within 20 feet of any university building is also prohibited. • Keep storage a minimum of 18" from sprinkler heads • Do not cover smoke detectors, manual fire alarm pull boxes or emergency lights • Do not overload electrical circuits • Keep a flashlight handy to use in case of power outage • Review UNH Housing Policy regarding Prohibited and • Permissible Items in Dorm Rooms Halogen lamps, hot plates, heating/immersion coils, electric frying pans, toaster ovens, electric blankets, non-UL listed items and electrical items not approved by the Department of Housing. • Firearms, candles, incense, explosives, fireworks, weapons of any kind, hazardous chemicals, gasoline, propane, butane, motorized vehicles of any kind (or parts, repair tools, and/or accessories for any motor vehicle)

Visit www.unh.edu/housing/housinginfo/firesafety.html for a complete look at fire safety in UNH residence halls.

We hope you have a safe, healthy and enjoyable school year at UNH. We are dedicated to providing students, faculty, staff and visitors of Durham and UNH the very best fire protection possible. We ask that you do your part in helping to insure everyone's safety.

Peter O'Leary Fire Chief
