To the Editor:

The Staff of the Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP), would like to welcome everyone back for a new and exciting semester at UNH. For both new and returning students, faculty and staff, SHARPP wants to remind you of the many ways we can be a resource.

SHARPP is an on campus organization offering confidential, nonjudgmental support and information on issues such as sexual assault, intimate partner abuse, stalking, and sexual harassment. For more than 25 years, SHARPP has served UNH faculty, staff and students of various backgrounds, who are survivors of abuse or concerned others.

Most of us don't want to think that anyone we know and care about could be affected by abuse. But the reality is different, and the numbers of women, children and men who are affected are staggering. Unfortunately, our UNH community is no different. According to a recent UNH study, 28% of female students and 12 % of male students experienced either unwanted sexual contact or unwanted sexual intercourse ("Unwanted Sexual Experiences at UNH: Incidence and Prevalence" Banyard, Cohn, Moynihan, Walsh, & Ward, 2006). Furthermore, roughly 1/3 of high school and college students experience sexual, physical, verbal, or emotional abuse in dating relationships (Mitchell, Anita "Teen Dating Violence" Protecting Sexually Active Youth, Vol. 4(1), March, 1996).

For support and information for you, or someone you know, trained staff and volunteers offer:

•One-to-one emotional support,

•Assistance with medical after-care and safety planning,

•Assistance with academic interventions to relieve academic stress due to trauma,

•Assistance in navigating the system if you wish to make a police report; pursue disciplinary action through UNH Judicial Programs, or obtain a protection order,

•Referrals to additional resources and counseling,

•24-hour hotline (603) 862-SAFE (7233) For education, training and outreach, we offer:

•Peer education programs & trainings for staff and departments,

•Fact sheets, brochures and posters,

•Special outreach events and awareness campaigns,

•Lending library of books and videos,

•Information to support academic research on related topics.

For more information on how to volunteer as a direct support advocate, or as a peer educator call our office at 862.3494. Staff, students and faculty from all walks of life are encouraged to apply!
