Dear Editor, Student Senate and Student Body President, I am writing this letter in support of the AAUP and the professors here at UNH. While it may be inconvenient for those students wishing to take summer classes, the more important issue is that our professors receive the pay and benefits they feel they deserve. The AAUP has repeatedly said that they would much prefer to not strike and have asked the university to sit down and negotiate. While it is true that there would not be any jobs here at UNH without the students, it is also true that if the university does not treat our tenure-track professors with the respect and dignity they deserve that there are plenty of other universities who will. The very same professors who the Student Senate has turned their back on with their resolution are the same who have helped all of us excel in our particular area of study and have also worked here for the student body without a contract since 2006. I would ask that the Student Senate remember these facts, and perhaps draft a resolution calling for university leadership to negotiate fairly with the AAUP so that our professors receive the salaries and benefits they deserve. Remember that there are two sides of this issue, and if university professors are pushed to strike this summer, university leadership is equally, if not more, at fault for not negotiating with the AAUP and causing these extreme repercussions.
