Today, we would like to echo the sentiment of a New York Time's editorial from Wednesday, titled "Curbing Speech at Quinnipiac."
In the editorial, the Times scolded the Connecticut-based university for trying to suppress an upstart, independent online paper, The Quad News, by imposing a gag order on administrators, coaches and athletes. They later threatened to expel the Quinnipiac chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists from campus, before finally rescinding the threats in the face of criticism by journalism groups and free speech activists.
TNH would like to thank the Times for supporting Quinnipiac journalism students and put our support behind The Quad News as they continue to struggle against their university's administration.
At TNH, we may complain about getting the runaround from university officials or that the only statement being offered from the administration is the party line on certain issues. But thankfully, the UNH administration has never shown any outright hostility towards our writers and editors and understands that we are trying to do our jobs as journalists.
For an institution like Quinnipiac to ban its employees from talking to a news organization is unconscionable, especially when their school offers more than 50 journalism classes and a master of science in Journalism. The reasons behind their actions are still unclear because the university has not responded to media inquiries about the schools' reaction to the Times editorial.
While it seems that it may be some time until the issues at Quinnipiac are wholly resolved, we urge The Quad News to continue doing what it has been doing, because in situations like this, if somebody isn't getting upset, you aren't doing your job.
