New York Jet coach Eric Mangini announced on Wednesday that former UNH Wildcat, and NCAA all-time career touchdowns leader David Ball had signed with the team's practice squad. Ball replaced Cornerback Manny Collins, who was released by the organization.
Ball, a former walk-on who made national headlines in 2006 after passing NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice on the all-time touchdown reception list with his 58th career trip to the end-zone, began the season as a member of the Chicago Bears practice squad after seeing limited playing time in the preseason. He was released by Chicago on Sept. 18 as part of a '"tactical move"and was resigned by Chicago on Sept. 21, then released for good on Sept. 24.
In between his NFL jobs, Ball had been living and conditioning in Durham with his former coaches and teammates. By the time he graduated in 2007 with a dual degree in kinesiology and sports education, Ball had become the Wildcat's record holder in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions in a game, a season, and a career. He is also second in scoring behind former Wildcat and NFL player, Jerry Azumah.
No specifics were released on the terms of the signing, but it is likely Ball was signed at the minimum rookie rate of $285,000. Player contracts are not guaranteed in the NFL, however, and if a player is cut or quits the team the remaining balance of his contract is voided.
The Jets are currently tied with the St. Louis Rams for the second worst record in the NFL at 2-9. With five weeks remaining in the regular season, the Jets are scheduled to face Miami, Cleveland, New England, Tennessee and Kansas City.
It was the Jets, of course, that initiated "SpyGate" after their 38-14 week one loss to the Patriots. Mangini, a former Patriots assistant coach, accused Bill Belichick of taping the Jets' defensive hand signals with a handheld camera from the Pats' sideline, which is illegal in the NFL. When the accusations were revealed to be true, Belichick and his staff were reviled by the national media, and had to endure claims that their success since 2001 was tarnished.
The Jets currently have six wide receivers on their active roster, however four of those players, Jericho Cotchery, Chris Baker, Brad Smith and Laveranues Coles are listed as injured for week 13. The Jets rank 25th in passing yards per game this season and are 19th in total passing TDs. The team has been unsteady at the quarterback position, after having to rely on the inexperienced Kellen Clemens after yet another injury to regular starter Chad Pennington.
The Jets travel to Gillette Stadium for their much-anticipated rematch with the Patriots on Dec. 16.
