Well folks, it's all over. One more year of UNH athletics is in the books, and we here at TNH Sports had plenty to fill our pages with. And this being the "Year in Review" issue, I figured I would take some time to review the events that took place on the fields, the rinks, and the hardwood this past year.
One thing that I discovered just this past week about UNH athletics, is that every single Division I team here made it to some kind of playoff. Whether it was conference or national, every single team extended their play beyond the last game of the regular season. That's pretty impressive. Honestly, how many schools can say that all their teams made the playoffs?
We saw a lot of good this year. Ricky Santos' farwell tour, which ended in the almost upset of the Northern Iowa in the first round of the FCS playoffs. The Women's Hockey team dominating everyone and their mother through out their season. Both the field hockey and volleyball teams turning it around after a not so good 2006 season. Kevin Regan doing what Kevin Regan does best, turn into a stone wall between the pipes. And the lacrosse team winning like it is going out of style.
We also saw a lot of not so good. The football team losing to that same Northern Iowa on the last play of the game. Women's soccer missing the NCAA tournament by inches, after Caitlin Whelan just missed the cross bar on a free kick with no time left in regulation of the America East finals. And the Men's hockey team losing in the Hockey East Championship in the third over time to Boston College.
And the ultimate not so good, the loss of Holley Young. May her memory and spirit live forever in the hearts of the UNH Athletic community.
I don't know about you, but I think the Sports section did a pretty good job covering all that was Sports News. If not, let me know. I will be back in this same post next year, and I want to hear what all of you think we can do to make this section better. E-mail, send letters, write your congressman. Do whatever you can to let me know how to do a better job.
Obviously, I couldn't do it all alone. I had one heck of a staff to help me out. To the sports writers Paul, Biz, and Shawn. Thanks for helping me out, covering all those games, and cranking out all those stories. I also want to thank all those lovely people at the Sports Information Department in the Field House. Scott Stapin and his crew have helped us out a lot over this year, especially with those staff reports. Once again I want to thank Coach Kristin Cole of the UNH Women's basketball team. I bothered her the most out of any coach at this school and she never gave me the cold shoulder.
Finally I want to thank John Ferguson. Last year we split the Sports Editor duties, but he has now gone on to bigger and better things. But let me tell you folks, he is the reason this section looked so nice week in and week out. And now he is running the entire paper. So thanks bud, for making sure I didn't send this section down the toilet.
But now I got a new partner in crime, Jake O'Donnell, and yes we have realized how similar our names are. And you can expect nothing but good, nay, spectacular things from us next year.
So take this summer to prepare, because come next fall, TNH Sports is going to blow your mind. Figuratively of course, not literally.
Peace and love.
