You don't have must-wins in October in college hockey. You just don't.
However, the No. 6 UNH men's hockey team topping then-No. 9 Northeastern University on Halloween night might be the next best thing.
The Terriers were 4-0-0 in Hockey East and were sitting atop the conference, so the UNH win brought NU closer to the rest of the pack. The win also stopped any kind of losing skid that could have arisen, as the Wildcats were attempting to bounce back after their sole loss of the season at St. Lawrence on Oct. 26.
That being said, UNH had to pick up the home win against a very good hockey team for one simple reason, said often so eloquently by Denver Post sports columnist Woody Paige: "Look at the schedule!"
After Friday night's game, the Wildcats departed on a six game road trip that consists of a rematch at Northeastern on Saturday (which the teams tied, 2-2), before setting off to No. 4 Minnesota for two games, UMass Lowell, No. 2 Boston College and finally at Northeastern, before returning home to face the Providence Friars on Nov. 22.
Whew!
Junior forward Bobby Butler clearly has heeded Mr. Paige's advice.
"It was huge because we have what, six games on the road or something?" he said. "Now we've got to go other places and play hard with our backs against the wall and hopefully keep going."
When the Terriers climbed back into the game Friday night and tied the Wildcats up in the third period, it gave UNH quite a scare but sophomore forward Phil DeSimone was able to put one in the net to bring home the W. DeSimone, like Butler, said home games like these are critical to pick up as many points as possible.
"They're a good team," he said. "Any team could have won tonight…we always play pretty good at home so when we're not there's something wrong. So hopefully we can build on this and go into November on the road and hopefully take the momentum from tonight and keep going with it."
UNH head coach Dick Umile has his team playing well at home, and while they aren't scoring a ton of goals in the early season, they are finding ways to win with defense. After the game, the coach said he sees each game individually, but recognized the conference match-ups are especially difficult.
"We pulled out an important win," he said. "We knew it was going to be a battle… it's a big win for us in Hockey East just to stay in the hunt. We've got a long way to go; we've only played three Hockey East games. We just beat a good team tonight."
Now the Wildcat faithful will have to sit tight and wait for the Wildcats to return home to face the Friars. By then they will have been road-tested and ready for the next part of the season.
