The University of New Hampshire basketball program has recently reached a verbal agreement with Rony Tchatchoua of the Findlay Prep School in Las Vegas to play for the Wildcats at the start of the 2007-2008 season.
Tchatchoua, a 6'6 forward from Douala, Cameroon, will sign a letter of intent sometime this week to make the decision official.
Also fielding interest from Texas State and Evansville, Tchatchoua decided UNH was the best fit for him after his recent visit to the campus.
"Other schools showed me the same love but there was just a something about UNH," said Tchatchoua. "I really liked the campus and the people that I had a chance to meet were very kind to me."
One of the main reasons impacting Tchatchoua's decision to come to UNH was the chance to play a lot of minutes in Head Coach Bill Herrion's system next year.
"I'm coming here to play and they showed me that there was a possibility that I could have a big impact on the team," said Tchatchoua. "I hope that with the help of others, I can bring a lot to the school."
One thing he should bring to the program is great versatility with the capability to play both on the wing and in the post.
"I am a perimeter player but I also play as a postman sometimes," said Tchatchoua. "I love to go to the basket and they said I can jump really high."
According to Scout.com, "Tchatchoua is one of the best kept secrets in the country. He's a big time athlete and potentially dangerous scorer."
"His length and hops combined with a quick first step make him nightmare on slashes to the rim. He's starting to become a reliable shooter from deep and loves to slide over from the help side for volleyball spike blocks," continued the report. "He's certainly worth a look from upper level mid and lower level high majors."
Before prepping at Findlay, Tchatchoua played high school basketball at Little Rock Christian Academy in Little Rock, A.R., where he led the Warriors to the their first ever state championship as a junior.
While at Little Rock, Tchatchoua was named a McDonald's All-American finalist his senior year. He was also elected 1st Team All-Conference in his sophomore, junior and senior campaigns, while being named 1st Team All-State in both his junior and senior seasons.
Tchatchoua will be the second recruit the Wildcats have had verbally commit to the program in the last month. James Madison University transfer Colby Santos gave his verbal commitment to the team about two weeks ago.
Aside from the verbal commitments the Wildcats have already had two players sign letters of intent in wingmen Tyrone Conley and point guard Sal Abdo.
