One week after it took over the hardwood, the hockey version of March Madness is set to begin this weekend as the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Tournament gets underway. For the eighth straight year, Dick Umile's Wildcats will attempt to do what no other team in program history has done - win a national championship.
The Wildcats head out west to face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first round of NCAA Tournament at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, CO. The Wildcats, who went 25-9-3 in the regular season and won the regular season Hockey East title, are the No. 1 seed in the West Regional bracket, which earns them the right to play the No. 4 seed Irish on Friday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WUMR-TV (Channel 9).
The winner of Friday's game will advance the regional final and play the winner of the other regional semifinal game between No. 2 Colorado College and No. 3 Michigan State. The regional final game will be on Saturday, March 29 at 10:00 p.m. That game will be aired on ESPNU.
The Fighting Irish enter the tournament with a 24-15-4 record, and are one of the record-six CCHA teams that are in the NCAA field. They are in the tournament for the second straight year and the third time overall, and have a 1-2 all-time record in the tournament.
The Wildcats have made the NCAA field 18 times in school history and 14 times under Dick Umile. They are one of only three teams, with Minnesota and Michigan, to make the tournament each of the last seven years. All-time the Wildcats are 12-21 NCAA tournament record. Under Umile, they are 10-13. The Wildcats have made the Frozen Four seven times in school history and made the championship game twice. The last time the team achieved either feat was in 2003 when they advanced to the title game against Minnesota.
In their all-time series with the Irish, the Wildcats hold the edge, winning all four games by a combined score of 22-7. The last time they met was on Nov. 27, 1999 when UNH skated to a 2-1 victory in Durham.
Though they have not advanced beyond the regional final in the past three years, UNH does have a tremendous amount of playoff experience. The team's six seniors, led by goalie Kevin Regan and forward Matt Fornataro, have made the postseason each year of their career. UNH has twelve players that have at least one game of NCAA tournament experience.
The Wildcats hope to be able to rebound after losing 5-4 in triple overtime to BC in the semifinal round of the Hockey East tournament on March 21. Kevin Regan stopped a career-high 62 shots in the eighth longest game in NCAA history, but was not able to block the shot that mattered most :43 seconds into the third overtime.
Notre Dame enters the game having lost nine of their last thirteen games. They finished fourth in their conference tournament, losing a three-game semifinal series to Ferris State, and the third place game to Northern Michigan.
Notre Dame will be without leading scorer Erick Condra after he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the series against Ferris State. Condra led the Irish with 15 goals and 23 assists. The Irish defense is anchored by CCHA Goalie of the Year, Jordan Pearce, who in 38 starts is 20-14-4. Pearce's 1.94 GAA was second in the conference, while his .917 save percentage is good for seventh.
The winner of the West regional round will advance to the Frozen Four in Denver on April 10, to play the winner of the East regional, where the No. 1 overall seed Michigan Wolverines are heavily favored.
