Kate Underwood won the 10K free technique and anchored the freestyle sprint relay squad to a second-place finish as the University of New Hampshire ski team finished fourth at the Williams Winter Carnival, which was held Feb. 20-21.
UNH tallied 520 points to finish behind Middlebury College (663.5 points), University of Vermont (646.5) and Dartmouth College (615) in the 11-team field.
Underwood, who was the runner-up in last week's 15K classic race at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, covered the Williams Outing Club 10K free technique course in 29 minutes, 46.1 seconds to win the event. Eeva Pregitzer also earned a top-10 finish, as her time of 31:00.8 was the eighth-best effort. In Saturday's sprint relay, Underwood followed Pregitzer and Margaret Maher and the trio earned second place with a time of 39:10.4.
Sydney Mikkelson continued her impressive alpine season on the slopes of Jiminy Peak. In Saturday's slalom competition, Mikkelson completed her two runs in 1:46.40 to finish third. One day earlier, her time of 1:57.96 placed sixth in the giant slalom.
Stephanie Vaughan took 18th place in the giant slalom with a combined time of 2:00.38, then finished 19th in the slalom at 1:52.86. Jodi Curry edged Vaughan in the slalom with a time of 1:50.94 for 16th place and also pointed in the giant slalom with a 21st-place finish (2:01.26).
In the men's Nordic competitions, Mike Stemp, Chris Mallory and Rody Lageson accounted for all of the Wildcats' points. Stemp had the top individual effort with 13th place in the 10K free technique and his time of 26:38.5 put him less than two seconds ahead of Mallory, who was the 14th skier to cross the finish line. Lageson, who was 26th in that race, raced the anchor leg of the free style sprint relay that included Stemp and Mallory and finished eighth.
A trio of Wildcats earned top-15 finishes in the men's slalom. Jacob Stevens led the way with a time of 1:45.97 for 11th place and was followed by Bryn Carey in 13th place (1:46.16) and David Koop in 15th (1:47.18). Koop was the top UNH skier in the giant slalom, as his time of 1:56.10 earned 16th place. Joe Dunn completed his two runs in 1:56.33 to edge Stevens by .24-of-a-second and take 20th place.
New Hampshire returns to action on Feb. 27-28 at the Eastern Championships, which will be hosted by Middlebury.
