Boston's own Eclectic Collective, known for their interactively high energy shows have been burning on all cylinders to earn their rightful spot as a nationally recognized touring band for quite some time. Made up of 10 members, with a wide range of instrumentation from, guitars and bass, to turntables, as well as a saxophone, and trumpet, this band has a sound of its own. According to Eclectic Collective's web site, they are a unique blend of jazz, soul, metal, rock, hip-hop, and rhythm.
After years of commitment and hard work, EC independently released their first full length (10 song) album called Time Flies. Time Flies captures the dynamic and genre assimilating energy of their live act. Following the release of the album, the band played as many shows as they could (sharing the stage with such acts as Fishbone, Maceo Parker, and Digable Planets) while at the same time, writing new material, as well as learning new cover songs to entertain and perhaps surprise the many crowds they play for. Last Halloween EC decided to show off just a bit playing a medley of cover songs ranging from Guns and Rose's "Sweet Child of Mine," to Rick James' "Superfreak," and even Rage Against The Machine's "Bulls On Parade."
The hard work and perseverance of the band has yet to come even close to slowing down since it's official inception in 2003. The band is currently in the studio working on their next album, entitled The Flux. This seven-track album (which will feature Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes on the track "Beautiful Mess") is being produced by Mike Poorman at Strangeways, as well as being recorded in Burlington, Vermont.
EC guitarist Salim Akram, 24, described the album in an interview as "more analog and live. We spent a lot of time getting sounds we wanted. We got a chance to do a lot of different things on this record that we didn't get a chance to do on Time Flies. We wanted to do a record that captured our live sound. The drums on this record are actual drums sound. On the last record we used a lot of triggers for the drums. And for the guitars we used all of our own effects that we use in our live show and not the outboard studio gear stuff like that has already made a huge difference."
Akram, who was willing to talk about the new album, went on to say that "most of the songs on Time Flies were written before Noni joined the band, so the record was missing an element you know, but all of the songs on The Flux were written with everyone so these songs have everyone's input and soul on it. You could say we found "our sound" on this record."
Following the release of this record in April, EC plans on hitting the road once again, making stops in Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Washington D.C., North Carolina, South Carolina, Atlanta, and Syracuse, where they have developed a good following. They also plan on visiting UNH in the spring for the 3rd consecutive year.
