When you head to the theaters to see a movie and you have that gut feeling, you know, that 'should I really spend ten bucks going to see this potentially awful flick' kind of feeling. Stick with your gut instinct, you're probably right.
"Perfect Stranger" is a murder mystery thriller starring Halle Berry as Rowena, a sexy hard-hitting investigative reporter who goes undercover to try to pin her friend's murder on philandering advertising mogul Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis).
Using her body, her street smarts and her computer savvy but pliable research assistant Miles (Giovanni Ribisi), Rowena infiltrates the Harrison Hill ad agency to spy on Hill. As the deception and mystery grows we start to realize that people are not always who they seem to be.
Halle Berry crashes and burns once again in a leading role calling into question the 'Best Actress Oscar' that she won in 2001. Maybe it is true that all you need to do is shed your clothes and a bucket load of tears for the Academy to take notice. Maybe she needs a new agent that will find her a role that doesn't rely primarily on her looks. In any case, Berry does little in this film to prove that she can actually act.
The supporting roles were not much more impressive except for Bruce Willis's portrayal of Harrison Hill. Willis made for a downright creepy antagonist, playing the unfaithful egomaniacal chauvinist to a tee. Ribisi however, whose character was the most interesting of the bunch, did little to capitalize on his character's complexity, ultimately serving as a mere distraction from the main plotline.
A surprise ending is the only compelling part of this film and maybe the only saving grace at that. Normally I would feel ethically bound to not even to mention a surprise ending but most people would either leave the theater or shut off the DVD before they reach the end anyway.
Despite its major flaws, it is hard to classify this film as a disappointment because it seems that every film, since the award winning "Monster's Ball" (2001), starring Halle Berry as the lead, has been a box office bomb. Unfortunately for Berry, in the cutthroat and sexist atmosphere that is currently Hollywood, roles will only be harder to come by as the inevitable effects of aging set in. This sad but true reality may see her quickly displaced by a new and equally talentless buxom starlet.
Hopefully Halle Berry will prove me wrong with her upcoming film "Things We Lost in the Fire," about a family coping with loss. But in the meantime save your cash. Don't even rent this film, wait for it to premier on TV and maybe it will be better interrupted by commercials.
