The Alpha Phi Omega coed fraternity is currently in its rush season, and is reaching out to all members of the University of New Hampshire community who are interested in making a difference through community service while gaining leadership skills.
"We are looking for any student who is motivated to change lives through community service," said sophomore Liz Rathburn, who pledged last semester.
The fraternity's 57 active members work at events and charities such as Relay for Life, Cornucopia Food Pantry, and the Ronald McDonald Houses in Boston and Portland. The group is open to all students, including commuters, and holds weekly meetings on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. in MUB 334.
"Open membership is big, and makes us unique," said Fraternity Advisor Mike Dow.
Rathburn remembers one of her favorite service projects was volunteering at Portsmouth's Strawbery Banke for its Halloween celebration. She really enjoyed being able to work with the children who were all excited and dressed up for the holiday.
Rathburn also enjoys working with the elderly.
"Benefiting them was rewarding," she recalled.
APO's first scheduled community service event will be Project Linus, which involves making fleece blankets for children in the hospital. The event will take place on Feb. 20 in the Hubbard Hall lounge from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
"No experience is necessary," said Chapter President Brittany Vater. "You just need to be able to tie knots."
The fraternity is excited for the coming semester and is looking to recruit as many students as possible.
APO will be holding their rush today at 4:30 p.m. in MUB room 304 and Sunday at 7 p.m. in room 12F. The Greek organization will also have a table at Jukebox II being held tonight in the MUB at 8 p.m. Potential pledges are also encouraged to contact Heather Falardeau at hlc5@unh.edu if pledge dates do not work or if they are interested in further information.
