Martin England purchased The Beach Boys record at five years old to play in his turntable, beginning his adventure into the world of music. At age 11, he started playing guitar, and hasn’t stopped since.

As a singer-songwriter in the New England area, England has seen his share of local bands make it or break it, but he continues on, using music as a place to escape sometimes. England also works at UNH in the technology department during the day. In the local area, he teams up with The Reconstructed, a professional group of musicians from Boston, to play shows.

“We (England and The Reconstructed) used to get paid $800 per gig, and now it’s more like $300 and free beer,” England said.

England’s past in music has brought him to many places like The Newport Music Festival and on tour with The Saw Doctors to places like The Vic Theater in Chicago, Ill., which has hosted bands like Wilco and My Morning Jacket. His music venue locations are very versatile, playing at local venues, in the Mount Washington valley region, or at house parties.

“I’ve reshuffled my vision of a venue; I’ve done street busking, which is an unnerving gig,” England said.

According to England, in certain venues, it is hard for a musician to play and have people focus on the music because so many bars have flat screen televisions playing sports on every wall.

“When I was 21, there was music everywhere, even dudes in the corner playing Jackson Browne; in New England now, it seems as though people only want to hear Van Halen and Aerosmith covers,” England said.

England is energized by things like new places, new people, his wife, Jenny, and his four dogs. His album has been picked up by channels like The Discovery Channel to play during their shows.
