VolleyBall: Compton named team MVP at volleyball banquet

Earlier in the day the program took time to honor and celebrate the memory of Holly Young. Young, a three-year member of the Wildcat volleyball program, passed away on Jan. 24 of this year after a courageous three-year battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. UNH volleyball honored Young's memory by planting a tree in the Memory Walk, retiring Young's jersey (#4) and participating in the Relay 4 Life on campus. In addition, the Most Valuable Player award has been named in Young's honor.
Compton played in all 28 matches during the 2007 season with 26 starts. On the season, she had a career-high 212 kills on 478 attempts. Compton's 101 total blocks in 2007 ranks her No. 9 in total blocks in a single-season at UNH. She finishes her career ranked No. 9 overall in career blocks at UNH with 200. She was named to the America East All-Conference second team.
Liz McAllister was named Karl Van Asselt Assist award winner. This award was given to McAllister for her hard work and dedication to the team through out the 2007 season.
Toni Barnas was the recipient of the Ed Jentes Coaches' Award. Barans, an America East All-Championship Team selection, recorded 36 kills in a five-game win over Syracuse. In the process, Barnas became just the fourth player in program history to join the 30-kill club and was just two kills off of the program record 38 kills set by Alyson Coler on Oct. 8, 2002.
Sophomore Kristen Bates, earned the Judy Ray Academic Excellence Award, given annually to the Wildcat with the highest GPA on the team. Bates is a two-time member of the America East All Academic team. An all-rookie selection a year ago, Bates was a true triple threat for the Wildcats ranking in the top 10 in the conference in kills (6th - 3.55 kpg) and aces (10th - 0.38 apg) and was among the team leaders in blocks and hitting percentage.
In addition to the awards, UNH introduced sophomore setter Kate Uitti as captain for the 2008 season. Uitti, who served as a tri-captain in 2007, was an America East All-Conference Second Teamer and America East Setter of the Week on three different occasions (Sept. 4, Sept. 17 & Oct. 22). With over 1,156 assists this season, Uitti, who was an all-rookie selection in 2006, moved into second on the all-time assists list at UNH.
In an event-filled day, Wildcat volleyball honored Emmy Blouin for becoming just the fifth player in program history to record 1,000 kills. Blouin, an America East All-Conference First Team selection, finished her storied career as third all-time on the career kills list with 1,293.
