Stephen C. Cmar, a sophomore geography major at UNH, died Thursday afternoon after losing control of his motorcycle on Durham Point Road and crashing into a car.
According to a press release from the Durham Police Department, Cmar, a 20-year-old resident of Bow, N.H., was traveling eastbound on the road when he lost control of his Suzuki motorcycle. He swerved into the westbound lane and was struck by a car driven by Durham resident, Stephen McDonald, 47.
Cmar was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision but sustained serious injuries, and was unconcious when rescuers arrived on scene. He died later at Dover’s Wentworth Douglass Hospital. McDonald was not injured.
The accident remains under investigation. Deputy Police Chief Rene Kelley told Foster's Daily Democrat that it appeared excessive speed on the part of the motorcycle may have been a factor in the crash.
Cmar was a member of UNH’s ROTC program, and a graduate of Bow High School. As of noon on Friday, over 500 people had joined a Facebook group entitled “In Honor and Loving Memory of Stephen Cmar.”
