Last Tuesday, the Student Committee On Popular Entertainment announced Comedy Central regular Lewis Black as their Homecoming weekend comedian. Black, known for his sarcastic and often politically charged rants, will be performing at UNH with his opener John Bowman as part of their "In God We Rust" tour on October 10 at 8 p.m.
"He [Black] is popular on HBO and Comedy Central, so we're just trying to hit as many people as we can with what's popular now," Kristen Morin, publicity director of SCOPE, said.
Although SCOPE brought Akon for last year's homecoming weekend, they hope that Black's intelligent and edgy humor will help shift homecoming weekend back into the comedic spotlight. When asked if Black's humor might not appeal to a college crowd, Morin didn't seem worried about the possibility.
"Enough people watch John Stewart and other comedians who use intelligent comedy that we think a lot of people will want to see him," Morin said. "I don't think we've seen any real negative feedback."
Morin thinks that tickets for the show will sell out within a week, though she did admit that comedians are harder shows to have sellouts for. Since the announcement of Black's appearance at UNH came after one full day of classes, the members of SCOPE have been working harder than their regular poster and chalk campaign.
"We've been trying to take advantage of Facebook more and we've been down at the bars every night handing out quarter sheets and trying to get the buzz out," Morin said.
According to Morin, SCOPE has also collaborated with WUNH in order to hold on-air giveaways next week. Tickets for the show go on sale next Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 9 a.m. at the MUB Ticket Office and are $15 for students and $30 for non-students.
