The 13-member search committee responsible for helping to select a new UNH president narrowed the field of candidates to approximately 10 individuals after convening on Monday. They reviewed more than 60 applications during their weeklong session.

In a telephone interview earlier this week, Search Committee Chair Edward Dupont, a University System of New Hampshire trustee and vice chairman of the board, said that the committee received a "positive response" in regards to the presidency, and that they were pleased with the quality of the remaining candidates.

"We have a robust pool of applicants with the academic experience and administrative capabilities needed to be the next president of UNH," said Dupont.

He also noted that the Heidrick and Struggles professional consulting firm specialists hired to assist with the search process "were pleased with the response," as well.

Student Body President Sean Kelly, one of the search committee members, expressed confidence in the current status of the search process.

"We really had a good pool [of applicants] to begin with and at this stage in the process, I'm really optimistic about this first cut," said Kelly.

Dupont also indicated that the next step in the process will be the "airport interviews" in mid-October, when the remaining candidates will be interviewed by the search committee near the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. During an interview last month, Dupont said the location was chosen for "logistical reasons."

According to Dupont, the group will then be narrowed to three to four prospective individuals who will each visit UNH and UNH Manchester in late October or early November to become acquainted with the campuses and get a better understanding of the university community.

The names of the applicants that will attend the "airport interviews" have not been released.
