If you're into live music, nature, and cheap rent, Newmarket may be the place for you. Many UNH students choose to live in Newmarket over Dover and Durham for various reasons, but its undeniable that Newmarket has an earthy touch that some find irresistible.
The Stone Church, a popular venue for live music and drinks, is just the place to pick up on the Newmarket vibe. Tuesday night is free bluegrass night, and last Tuesday, Halloween, brought both spook and knee slapping tunes together.
Jeremy Tomkiewicz, a junior who lives in Newmarket, was at the Stone Church for the music, good cheer and costume contest. Tomkiewicz and several friends came dressed in soccer jerseys and kicked off a practice session in front of the stage. Everyone was invited to join in; Tomkiewicz even brought extra jerseys.
"There are always at least four bands up on that chalkboard that I want to see," said Tomkiewicz, pointing at the upcoming band list on the wall. "Where else can you find that?"
Tomkiewicz enjoys more than the live music in Newmarket. "I can drag my kayak across the lawn and be right on the Lamprey River," he said.
Senior Jess Plourde moved to Newmarket last June in search of cheap rent; however, she also attributed the Stone Church's lineup of live music to her move.
"Durham really isn't my scene. I never wanted to go to Scorps or frat parties," said Plourde. "Newmarket is way more low-key."
Unlike many on-campus students, Plourde got to enjoy the summer on the Seacoast. The weather was just getting hot when she and her three roommates moved into their Newmarket apartment in June.
Plourde and her friends found a great way to beat the heat last summer by floating down the Lamprey River in tubes. Their journey from the Wiswall Bridge to Packers Falls took them roughly two hours.
"It was great to just chill and hang out," said Plourde. "Ya' know, just float."
Senior Scott Peach also appreciates the natural beauty to be found in Newmarket. "Bay Road is a great place to see the Great Bay just open up -- it's beautiful," said Peach.
