Any doubts about the UNH women's basketball team were put to rest as the Wildcats defeated Bishop University 64-36 Saturday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.
For the first few minutes of the game, both teams were trying to shake the off-season cobwebs and it looked as if the game would be close.
Bishop University showed a strong full-court press for much of the game and quick ball movement allowed them to get out to a 5-2 lead just six minutes into the game.
However, that would be the only lead Bishop University would have all game, as the Wildcats were able to gain momentum on their side and show Bishop University why their 9-2 record at Ludholm Gym was no fluke.
Whitney Edward's leadership helped the team create an offensive dominance that resulted in a 47 percent team shooting percentage from the floor.
Danielle Clark picked up right where she left off last year as the team's leading scorer, finishing the game with a total 15 points in 22 minutes. But her performance was over-shadowed by sophomore forward Danielle Flowers who collected 14 points in the game, 10 of them coming in the second half along with three rebounds.
"I didn't expect to be hot tonight, but my shots managed to fall," said Flowers. "The team played well and that allowed me to play well Saturday night."
The Wildcats also took control on defense, allowing only 15 total points in the first half and a 30.6 percent shooting percentage total at the end of the game. Taking away the paint, the Wildcats forced Bishop University to settle for three-point shots 19 times while giving up just three baskets all from Amok Boulanger, who managed to go 50 percent on her three-point attempts in the second half.
The game also allowed people to get a look at freshman Amy Simpson, who produced 11 points, Rachael Fowler, who collected four rebounds, and Jenny McDade, who recorded an assist, a block, and two steals for the Wildcats.
"I am very pleased with the way we played today, especially the way the defense was able to stop their drive," said Coach Sue Johnson.
The team's performance was a good surprise for Danielle Clark. " We only practiced for three weeks as a team and I was worried, but everything ironed out during the game," said Clark. UNH's opening game for the season is next week on Nov. 14 at UMass.

Bishop University has the nickname 'Gaiters'.
Please do not refer to them as Canucks.
