As the school year resumes with the start of the spring semester, the UNH community is reminded of how fragile life can be. Over break, both Donald Murray, an award-winning writer and founder of the UNH Journalism program, and senior Danielle Thompson passed away, leaving huge voids in the UNH community. Their respective passings only help to remind us how easily someone we love can be taken away from us, and the entire TNH staff sends its thoughts and prayers to both families.
On a brighter note, the new year has brought some interesting stories back into the fold, least of all the men's hockey team. Led by forward Trevor Smith's deft scoring touch and Kevin Regan's rock solid goaltending, the 'Cats have climbed all the way to number two in the country and are showing no signs of slowing down. With huge conference games approaching, the rest of the season promises to be as exciting as the first half, and the excitement level can only be raised higher with the continued involvement of the student body at the games. The crowds at The Whitt have been generous so far, but there is always more room for further fan support, so go out and support your school's hockey team.
Switching from the ice-covered rinks of New Hampshire to the marble tiled floors of the United States capitol; we have a potentially fascinating story involving the 2008 presidential election. Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton tossed her proverbial hat into the ring of presidential hopefuls, setting up the almost surreal battle between Clinton and fellow Democratic challenger, Sen. Barack Obama. Who knows what will transpire once the Election Day hour nears, but one thing is certain: this country is in for one hell of a ride. Never before has a minority candidate been so perfectly positioned to capture the White House as Obama is now. The same could be said about Clinton, who continues to defy all odds and skeptics alike, nudging her way to the top of the early campaign polls. Maybe this amazing political development is what our country needs now. With an unpopular war continuing to rage in Iraq and both sides of Congress playing their nasty little partisan games, any notion of change is a good notion. No matter what you think of both candidates, you have to admire their respective stomachs, because it has become more and more evident how sordid our political landscape has become. Don't think that for one minute Hillary and Barack will be immune from the vindictive and nasty campaign ads that have begun to surface on our nation's television screens with alarming frequency, because they won't -- nor should they be. What this country needs is a strong and reasonable leader, one who will listen to the people as well as foreign governments. Now more than ever, we as Americans need to stop and listen to exactly what is being said by our politicians. In this day in age, a person's skin color or sex shouldn't matter, their respective words and actions should.
