ABC one of many break options

On March 5, 2012

With a week off from school for spring break, some UNH students will be scattered across the country, while others will remain in the Granite State.

For seniors, spring break offers the chance to bond one last time with close friends before graduation in May.

"I'm pumped because I've never had a spring break with my friends," senior Svetlana Lacciola said. "I'm going to Cancun with my two friends as a graduation gift."

Many students elect to spend their time helping others through various programs that UNH offers.

The Alternative Break Challenge is one program that students are able to take advantage of as they are placed in cities across the country to help with youth or in community building.

"I'm going to East St. Louis with the ABC trip," junior Sara Dillingham said. "I don't have the money to go anywhere and instead of going home, I wanted to go somewhere where I could do something good."

Christian Impact is also sponsoring trips to serve others. There will be two trips for Christian Impact: one in Hartford, Conn., and the other in the Seacoast area, working with Habitat for Humanity.

"I'm going to do the Christian Impact trip," freshman Eric Hutchins said. "I like that I am actually going somewhere where I could make a difference."

While many students do take a break from their schedules, some work the days off in order to earn money.

"I'll be working and doing my internship during the break," senior Elyssa Arriel said. "I'm not excited. It's just another week for me."

Trips down south are popular with students for this spring break. Some are headed to North Carolina to rock climb while others are headed to Florida to escape the cold weather.

For those staying home in New Hampshire, family is a major factor.

"I'm going home because it is the last time I'll see my family before graduation," senior Kelly Heinze said. "It's my last spring break ever so I'm excited to be home."
