Despite a disappointing regular season by Durham standards, the UNH men's hockey team will be competing for the Hockey East championship in the conference tournament. That's the good news.
As the No. 6 seed, the Wildcats have drawn third-seeded Boston University in this weekend's quarterfinal round, a team that thoroughly dominated UNH during the 2011-12 campaign. The Terriers owned an 11-2 scoring edge in a three-game season sweep, beginning with a 5-0 thumping of the ‘Cats in the season opener.
After being upset at home in the opening round in consecutive seasons, UNH finally broke through to the Garden rounds last year, sweeping Vermont before falling to Merrimack in the semifinals.
The Wildcats will enter this tournament in the unfamiliar position of underdog. For the first time in 16 years the Wildcats must play their first-round series away from the Whittemore Center. The last time this happened came after the 1995-96 season, with UNH falling to Maine in two games at Alfond Arena in Orono.
This weekend's series will begin Friday night at, with Game 2 following on Saturday and a third and final matchup set for Sunday afternoon, if necessary.
All three games will be played at Boston's Agganis Arena, with the puck set to drop at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday if the game is needed. Saturday's game will be broadcast on NESN.
