Miley Cyrus phenomenon is a party in the USA
Nude leotards, foam fingers and two tight blonde buns atop people's heads flooded the Halloween scene this October. Her provocative performance at the Video Music Awards has not only gained her criticism but also undeniable fame.
Society can't stop and won't stop watching Miley Cyrus as she becomes an icon. Google Shopping Data via MarketWatch ranked Miley Cyrus among the top five costumes of Halloween 2013.
Party City in Newington knows all about the Cyrus buzz. Morgan, a sales manager at Party City, who chose to keep her last name anonymous, said, "We noticed a large rise in sales in foam fingers this season." Although they didn't sell a complete Cyrus costume, the sales manager noticed leotards and foam fingers flying off the shelves.
"I decided to be Miley for Halloween after my roommate mentioned that she wanted to be the wrecking ball," UNH junior Bridget Fitzpatrick said. "We thought it would be a funny pair to do. I got some friendly laughs and people yelling 'Miley!' to which I would stick my tongue out in true Miley fashion."
Whether it was Thursday, Friday or Saturday, of Halloween weekend a Miley Cyrus look-a-like was a common sight. It was mainly female UNH students who were dressed as the pop star, but several males decided to take on the role as well.
On Halloween day, a male was dressed in a white sports bra and white jeans, with the infamous two blonde buns on his head. He walked around Holloway Commons normally, and when a student asked him to "twerk like Miley," he shook his behind in the middle of the room. Cyrus's unique persona was a hit all weekend long.
"I saw three other Mileys during my Halloween weekend," UNH junior Natalie Collins said. "One dressed as her from the VMA's, another from the 'We Can't Stop' music video, and the last from the music video 23. I dressed up as the wrecking ball Miley."
UNH wasn't the only area to latch on to the Cyrus trend. Other schools and even celebrities dressed as her for Halloween. Harry Styles, Jenny McCarthy, Kelly Ripa, Lara Spencer, Paris Hilton, Joan Rivers, and Crystal Harris all put their own spin on the wide range of facades associated with Cyrus.
It is no surprise Cyrus is currently one of the most watched celebrities of 2013. People magazine places her at number four on the top 25 celebrity hot list. Whether it is good or bad publicity, everyone is watching.
Her latest music video release, "Wrecking Ball," has climbed to Cyrus's top viewed video with over 274 million views on YouTube.
What has made her a trending figure to follow seems to be her obscenity.
"Miley has done a 180 over my teenage years," Collins said. "I feel like it is hard for parents whose children are growing up with her. She used to be a good role model, and now she's nothing a mother wants to see in a child."
Although she has received a lot of criticism, her album sales are a force to be reckoned with. The 20-year-old singer's newly released album, Bangerz, has earned her the largest sales week for a solo female artist in 2013, selling over 270,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Mark Hungerford, a UNH media studies professor, agreed that it's her "out there" performances that are grabbing our attention.
"Her edgy actions are disliked upon the older generation mainly," Hungerford said. "But she is being careful by not saying any racist remarks that would get her in deeper trouble. She is just gaining free publicity for her album and it's working."
2013 proved to be Miley Cyrus's most popular year yet. From innocent Disney star, to attention-grabbing risqué performances, Cyrus is without a doubt turning heads and starting trends.
