Immediately following the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings, UNH students gathered and held a vigil to honor the victims and their families and friends. On Friday, May 3, an electronic dance music benefit concert, called Wild on UNH, will be performed in the Whittemore Center Arena.
The concert will feature artists such as such as Morgan Page, Kap Slap, Tommie Sunshine, DSK CHK, Joe Bermudez, Olik from Berlin, DJ Rhyot and DJ Lushous. The disk jockeys and producers are volunteering their time and talent, and 100 percent of the ticket proceeds will go to The One Fund Boston, Inc., a nonprofit that provides aid to those affected by the bombings.
NV Concepts, an event specialist company that is based in Holyoke, Mass., will present Wild on UNH. The company produces over 120 events in Boston and the New England area each year, founder Tim Bonito said.
The concert is particularly significant to Bonito, who organized the event.
"Boston is near and dear to our hearts and we want to do our part to give back to the victims of this unthinkable tragedy," Bonito said. "I personally was in Boston the day of the bombings and have never seen such a large number of police, fire and emergency vehicles in my life."
Bonito contacted DJs that the company had worked with in the past, and received a "tremendous response."
Local artist Garrett Finn is one of the artists to respond. Finn is a senior communications major at UNH. He is also an electronic dance music artist, and his stage debut will be this Friday alongside his friend DJ Lushous.
"This is a huge [event] for multiple reasons," Finn said. "First of all, obviously, it's going to be a great show for a great cause, as all the proceeds for the ticket sales are going to support The One Fund to help out in Boston. So that's phenomenal. And further than that, I know Lushous and myself are extremely, extremely excited for our big stage debut."
As Finn finishes up his senior year, he said he is excited to play alongside big names in electronic dance music.
"And in what better place than here at UNH in front of all our friends," Finn said.
"You know, we've been to concerts here and it's unbelievable to get to share a stage with the guys that are coming."
Finn also said he's had a hard time staying focused on schoolwork since he got the call to perform. As a senior, he is excited to close out his college career with the performance.
"It's probably the best possible thing I could imagine doing to bring my senior year to a close," Finn said.
Finn is not the only artist that responded to NV Concept's call.
Tommie Sunshine, a DJ, producer and songwriter from Brooklyn, N.Y., will also be performing.
"This Friday I'm donating my time and playing a benefit for the victims of the Boston Bombing," Sunshine wrote on a blog post.
Morgan Page, from Burlington, Vt., is also waiving his fee to play for the benefit. Though originally from Vermont, Page has close connections with Boston.
"As a native New Englander and Emerson College alumnus, I'm proud to be involved with an event to help raise money for the victims of the Boston bombing," Page said in a press release. "It's the least I could do to help out."
Artist Kap Slap is a DJ, producer and student at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He hails from Lexington, Mass.
"Many of my friends and family have run in the Boston marathon and for something like this to happen really hits close to home," Kap Slap said in a press release. "I want to do everything in my power to help the city I love, so I couldn't be happier to play this event."
The artists are happy to help Boston, as is Kim Walsh, a special events intern at the Whittemore Center Arena.
"We are very excited to be a part of a show that will help One Fund Boston and are hoping to promote the event to as many students as possible," Walsh said.
