Myrick's season over after suffering ruptured patellar tendon

The UNH men's basketball team suffered yet another devastating season-ending injury to one of its top players this past week.

Sophomore forward Ferg Myrick, the Wildcats' second-leading scorer, injured his right knee on a drive to the basket late in UNH's loss to Boston University on Tuesday night and had to be helped off the court. The team found that Myrick had ruptured the patellar tendon in that right knee and will be forced to sit out for the remainder of the season.

In his first year as a full-time starter, Myrick had been enjoying a breakout season, averaging 12.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. His best performance came on Nov. 30 against the then seventh-ranked UConn Huskies, when he scored a season-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. UNH could not quite pull off the upset, falling at Connecticut, 62-55.

Myrick will join senior guard Alvin Abreu on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Abreu tore an anterior cruciate ligament in just the second game of the season for UNH. After medical redshirting this season, Abreu will return next season in a fifth year of eligibility.

The Wildcats, already last in the America East conference in points per game (58.4), will have to adjust to life with two of their top scorers on the bench. It is likely that seniors Tyrone Conley (12.4 ppg) and Dane DiLiegro (9.1 ppg) will have to shoulder even more of the scoring load. Freshmen Scott Morris and DeAndray Buckley will also help give UNH more depth on the wing in Myrick's absence.

UNH stands at 6-8, including 0-2 in America East play, at about the halfway point of the regular season. The Wildcats will take on Binghamton this Saturday at Lundholm Gymnasium, giving the team little time to recover in the wake of Myrick's injury.
