This week was UNH’s Non-Traditional Student Appreciation Week, a five-day period set aside to celebrate and welcome non-traditional students to UNH and give them a venue to meet students.
A non-traditional student is anyone who is different than the normal demographic description of a student, whether it be an individual who is older than 26, an international student or a veteran. Brett Gagnon, the Commuter Connections coordinator, as well as this year’s Non-Trad Appreciation Week coordinator, also applied the term non-traditional to any student who doesn’t feel included under the normal student demographic.
“Sometimes students feel like they’re not part of the community,” said Gagnon, “This week is a way to recognize different populations on campus & make them feel welcome at the university.”
UNH’s Non-Trad Appreciation week is in accordance with a nationally celebrated Non-Trad Appreciation week, celebrated by many colleges around the United States. The week’s events include commuter coffee hours in the morning, a dessert social, a veteran social, the MUB’s What’s on Wednesday’s and a commuter social. Some of the events, like the coffee houses and What’s on Wednesday, were already happening through commuter connections, so Gagnon decided to implement them into the week’s non-trad designed activities. Yesterday was the week’s main event, which was the dessert social.
“It’s just a way to show non-trad students that they are welcome on this campus and we appreciate them,” said Gagnon.
