‘Twas weeks before Christmas, when all through the newsroom
Every student was working, every person consumed.
The writers were working on their stories with care,
In hopes they would not be an editor’s nightmare.
The designers finished pages all beautifully spread,
While visions of typos filled them with dread.
These are the last 20 pages that we’ll make
Before we settle down for a long winter break.
A knife fight, a flag and Smith arose quite a clatter,
But we think our stories hit at the heart of the matter.
The semester has flown by, gone in a flash,
It seems like only yesterday our papers were thrown in the trash.
But Durham’s now covered with some new-fallen snow,
So sled down Library Hill or give a snowball a throw.
This fall, more than 75 writers appeared,
Eager to contribute and compete with their peers.
Some were pros, others learned real quick
That newspaper work is tough; it’s no cheap trick.
More rapid than deadlines our paper has changed,
We added features and business and a Sudoku game.
More photos, more videos, more columns and stories,
New websites, new Twitters and newfound online glory.
We try to limit AP stories to localize our news,
But pages 12 through 17 you’ll have to excuse.
To the top of the clocktower, to the top of the MUB,
We cover everything we can, even the bondage club.
If you have suggestions, we welcome them all;
Just send us an email or make a telephone call.
As we leave for winter we’ll give you this cheer:
Good luck on finals and see you next year!
