Reflections on the semester that was – whatever it was

Suffice it to say that this has been a news-filled semester. In one sense, it made my job easier. In another, it made it 10 times tougher.

No matter how you look at it, there was never a lack of stories. UNH was always buzzing about something.

There was the new email system that everyone hated, then didn't mind two weeks later. There was the Dunkin' Donuts announcement. The story of Professor Larkin (and our ensuing editorial. And the response to our editorial. And our response to that response).

There was the 10th anniversary of 9/11. There was the energy drink ban, followed by its subsequent withdrawal. #Hallowcoming blew up. We had what felt like 1,000 stories on Occupy Wall Street. SCOPE announced two shows, which quickly turned into one. The administration and AAUP couldn't come to an agreement. Again. An October storm knocked out power too much of the state. A fraternity was busted for drugs.

Oh, and the opening of Dunkin' Donuts – for real this time.

Undoubtedly, there were things we did (or didn't do) or wrote that you didn't agree with. But it's my hope that you were more informed because of our paper, and that our opinion section made you think.

We're always looking to improve, though, and your feedback is what helps us realize areas in which we can do so.

While we'll be losing a few staff writers and a talented news editor, I have no doubt those positions will be filled by other talented journalists.

A former executive editor who has spent the semester abroad will take over as editorial page editor. We'll be hiring a web editor and, hopefully, an assistant sports editor.

My goal is to assemble a staff of students best prepared to bring you the news – every day. We'll be looking to utilize our website and social media outlets to bring you the news at it happens, not just every Tuesday and Friday. It's our goal to make the newspaper just one aspect of us.

By and large, serving the university has been a pleasure.

But without you, our mobile app, our website and our newspaper don't matter. Without your feedback, it's tough for us to get better.

As editor, this semester was a dream filled with big stories, talented co-workers and readers who cared enough to let us know when they felt we did something wrong.

I can only hope bringing you the news next semester will be as enjoyable.
