Letters: Liberals not less war prone than conservatives

Mr. Goodwin has the right message in is "Afghanistan War" column, however I am sad to think of the high hopes he placed on Mr. Obama to end the war. To say one is surprised of Mr. Obama's troop escalation because of his "liberal background" is naïve when considering the history of US foreign policy after WWII. I would challenge someone to find a U.S. president (including Mr. Kennedy- Vietnam and Cuba and Mr. Carter- Iran) that did not have an interventionist foreign policy during that period—regardless of his party.
To say liberals are less war-prone than Republicans is like saying one is healthier for drinking Diet Coke instead of regular—in the end they'll both rot your teeth. One should not have expected different from Mr. Obama—for during the presidential campaign he and the Democrats clung to the theme of Iraq as the ‘unjust war' and Afghanistan as the ‘just war.' Only Dennis Kucinich and Republican Ron Paul were ever serious about ending U.S. hegemony.

Let's be more specific. The Obama/Shaheen/Shea-Porter wing of the American War Party is as much engaged in the business of empire as the other Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Gingrich/Palin wing. The task of these, our political masters, is to ruin the republic bequeathed to us by the Founders, by extorting as much personal property as possible from us, our children, and our children's children, and transferring that wealth to the death merchants in the "defense" industry. Those who object are subject to increased government surveillance, and branded "soft on terrorism", or worse, "unpatriotic." Republicans squawk about the cost of unemployment benefits, but nobody -- least of all the "budget hawk" Judd Gregg-- objects to a "Defense" budget bigger than that of all the other countries in the world combined. They're all corrupt liars, and selling the birth right of their constituents for a mass of porridge mixed by the multinational corporations, wall street bankers, defense contractors, and oil companies. Disgraceful! But, hey, the stupid people of America get what they deserve, and right now we have the Illinois huckster pretending he's progressive, and trying to sell us a "healthcare" bill of goods that benefits nobody more than the insurance corporations and big pharma. But, we still have "hope," and we're still the "greatest country in the world."
