Police arrested a Dover man on Friday in connection with an assault at the Gables last weekend that left the victim with a broken nose and cuts to his face and arm.

Evan M. Towle, 20, of 32 6th St., Dover, N.H., has been charged with second-degree assault for his alleged part in a fight that occurred outside a Gables apartment at approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. Towle is not a UNH student. He was released on $25,000 personal recognizance bail and is expected in Dover’s 7th Circuit Court on Oct. 25.

The 19-year-old victim of the assault has been treated and released from an area hospital.

Police continue to investigate the case and expect more arrests will be made. According to original reports, the victim first fought a white male inside a Gables apartment before being assaulted outside the apartment by two white males and a black male early on Sunday morning.

University President Mark Huddleston sent an email to the student body on Friday morning addressing the assault. In the message, Huddleston said that although the assault occurred at a time and in an area in which many witnessed it, no one contacted the police until long after the attack took place. Huddleston said that it was “disappointing to know that we—as a community—took no action to help a fellow student.”

He stressed that students should not put themselves at risk by involving themselves in an assault, but that making a simple 911 call can make a difference.
