The UNH swimming and diving team is confident and they have every reason to be.
After their first three events, the team currently stands at 3-0, with their most recent victory coming last weekend against Wagner College. They won the meet 121-77, capturing first place in all but three events.
Prior to their dominant performance, the Wildcats won their season opening tri-meet with ease, defeating Niagara 213-85, and Siena College 191.5-102.5.
So far, UNH has had many swimmers step up and take control in each of their contests. According to coach Josh Willman, the early success has had to do with everyone on the team being on the same page.
“All the girls this year seem to have some serious dedication and priority,” Willman said.
And when asked where he looks to finish this season, Willman seemed positive.
“Right now, we’re just trying to go out there and swim as fast as we can,” he said. “For the long haul of the season, though, we want to train hard to build up our endurance.
Senior captain Mattie Fowler said that the season has certainly started out with a bang, and the team looks poised to make a run at the top spot in the conference.
“So far, the team has been better than I thought we would be,” Fowler said. “It shouldn’t surprise me, though. Our success to this point has been because of the girls working cohesively to try and be the best.”
Junior Amy Perrault believes this year looks very promising.
“This has been the best start the team’s had since I’ve been here,” said junior Amy Perrault. “All the girls have a very competitive mentality. When we swim, we try to win every meet and race to the best of our ability.
“Although we’re only three events in, we have high expectations for this season already.”
They haven’t had a meet since Oct. 18, but the layoff shouldn’t hurt the Wildcats since they continue to put in the hard work at practice.
“During hard practices, the girls try to have paramount support for each other,” Fowler said. “Even if we are all struggling, we try to cheer each other on.”
The Wildcats’ next meet is Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. when they host Central Connecticut at the Swasey Pool.
