Abroad

Mallory Baker

Last semester UNH Junior Mallory Baker served as a TNH Staff Writer. She’s now enjoying life outside Durham studying abroad in London.

London calling. Here I am, off on a semester abroad. Leaving my boyfriend, half my wardrobe, and my entire family behind. It's weird.

It's a big city. Sprawled out. The lights are blinding as we emerge from a cloud of haze.
Later, on the train, it looks as though we're driving through the Bronx. My freshly made friend Liz McLaughlin and I test out British accents, which evokes some less-than-friendly looks from our fellow travelers, who have real British accents.

We are all tired and jetlagged and we are letting everyone know it. The hallways are filled with the high-pitched complaining. The stairs are too narrow, and our bags are too heavy.
By the way, did I mention that, a) a kind of bellboy/RA helped to carry our bags up, b) our sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers are laundered every week by staff, and c) in order to dispose of garbage, one must simply leave the bag outside her door.

Step it up, UNH.

Tonight, no pub or club for me. Last night I spent the equivalent of 70 USD and wanted to die. Tonight my belt was a little tighter. No drinks, just pizza and salad for dinner at The Pizza Express with Chelsea Berg and Alyssa Hinman, the interior of which surprisingly resembles an upscale restaurant in the states (don't let the name fool you). Then, a McFlurry. Yes, they have McFlurries here, so obviously I had to try one as I am not immune to the wonders that the McFlurry holds. Unfortunately, no Oreo.

Off to bed to catch up on some sleep. By the way, I spent 23 minutes and 18 seconds on the phone with my boyfriend tonight. Ridiculous. I must be weaned off, as this type of behavior won't be healthy for my wallet after I use up my 300 free international minutes.
Cheers, America.

Current song on my iPod: "London Calling"- The Clash
Random thing I miss from home: Gas stations
Funniest Brittish thing I heard today: "Look with your bloody eyes!"
