Google Chrome Update Comes with VR Support

TNH Staff · February 10, 2017 · Leave a Comment

It seems that virtual technology is the latest trend in the tech word. All major tech companies are trying to capitalize on that by launching their own VR headsets and VR content, but one company is making the biggest progresses. Google is the company we are talking about. A couple of months ago Google launched its Daydream View headset. It looks like that wasn’t enough since the company recently equipped Chrome with VR support.

This information has been recently confirmed by Google. The Android parent stated that from now on, Chrome users will be able to view 360 degree only by using the Chrome app. This app can be downloaded only on Android devices and it works perfectly with Google’s Daydream View headset. We should mention that this quite a big step in VR technology.

Virtual Reality Websites

The reason why VR content is so popular right now is because its functionalities are endless. Because Google added VR support for Chrome, developers will be able to design VR websites. All of this will be done through the use of WebVR.

Even though WebVR is being used mostly by Google, there are many other companies behind it. Google managed to create WebVR with the help of Oculus, Mozilla and other developer teams. Firefox will also feature VR support in the future. Right now, only the beta version of Firefox supports VR but this will change in the upcoming future.

Daydream View Support

Users will not be able to use Chrome’s VR functionality to its full extent without the use of Daydream View. Worth mentioning is that Google is providing users with a huge library of VR content. The library includes great videos such as Bear 71 which is an interactive documentary. There is also Matterport which is basically a box filled with VR environments.

As previously mentioned, users are required to use a VR headset to fully enjoy the VR experience, but there’s a different way though. Google ensured that users that can’t afford a VR headset can use this feature. Chrome VR can also be used only through a smartphone. Users will be able to view VR content on their display and use their fingers to interact.
