WhatsApp or Signal: Which Messaging App Is Best For Your Needs

TNH Online · May 15, 2018 · Leave a Comment

This is the time in life where communication by messaging apps is king. You don’t have to call or text anyone anymore. There are a plethora of instant messaging apps out there for you to choose from WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, WeChat, Kakao Talk, Signal, Line, etc.

Of course, you may be wondering which one is right for you?

Many people are using two or more messaging apps, but this is the worst thing a person can do. After all, it drains the battery from your phone and takes up much-needed space. Plus, it’s a little redundant to have more than one messaging app on a smartphone or other device.

With so many out there, it’s important to take a good look at two possible contenders – Signal and WhatsApp.

Should You Use Signal or WhatsApp For Your Messaging Needs?

Both WhatsApp and Signal are widely popular and offer a great value to users – privacy. Signals are no advertising, creepy tracking tool or affiliate marketing. It’s keen on offering security to its users, using end-to-end encryption that ensures calls and conversations between users stay private. The only people who see these messages are the people talking to each other.

WhatsApp also has end-to-end encryption that includes status updates, documents, pictures and videos. WhatsApp is similar to Signal in that any information passed to people in a conversation is known to those people only.

When it comes to security, both apps are secure. However, Signal is better than WhatsApp as the information it obtains is limited to you only – that includes profile, mobile number and IP address. WhatsApp collects additional metadata such as information about your location and device. However, you can also back your chat history up.

Regarding features, WhatsApp is the winner. WhatsApp offers a plethora of functionalities to be used with the messaging and calls. 100MB or less-sized documents can be shared – ideal if you’re in a workplace. It also lets you control group chat settings, mute conversations, block someone, etc.

Which One Is Right For You?

If you’re worried about privacy, Signal is the messaging app for you, which uses a phone number to verify who you are. You can add a second phone number too if you’re really anxious about your privacy.
If you’re looking for a messaging app with neat features that allow you to share content with others, then WhatsApp is what you should be using. There are more than one billion people in the world using it for their calls and messages.
