Who’s waiting for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
Practically everyone!
In fact, it is the most highly anticipated upcoming game, especially now that Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident Evil 2 are out. The game also topped the Famitsu Most Wanted Charts followed by Animal Crossing for the Nintendo Switch in the second spot and Devil May Cry 5 on the third.
And PS4 users definitely have a lot to look forward to from the remake.
Looking back
The original Final Fantasy 7 was one of the titles that pushed JRPGs to the mainstream. It was released in 1997 on the PlayStation 1 and remained popular for a very long time.
Many had hoped for a remake for just as long and their hopes were given light when Square Enix revealed during E3 2015 that a remake of Final Fantasy 7 was in the works.
But it has been 4 years and counting, and that’s a long time to pine for something as amazing as this title.
What’s worse, any news about the remake went quiet following the announcement. The only sign that something is in the works are the few new screenshots revealed in 2017.
This caused many to think that the remake is still a long way off.
But the wait could be coming to an end.
Fast forward to 2018
Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase, director and producer of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, respectively, dropped hints about the project at the end of 2018.
When Nomura was asked during an interview with Famitsu about the words they will describe what the company has in store for fans in 2019, he simply said “seven” and added that more announcements are coming.
Kitase, on the other hand, said that the remake is going smoothly, which is contrary to previous reports that claimed the opposite.
“That was not official info. As I said at E3, development is progressing favorably,” Nomura said.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Rumors and speculations
- An unverified source said that a big event related to the Remake will be held in 2019. Square Enix is said to host a 2-hour event come April 2019. The event is said to rival the 2016 Final Fantasy XV Uncovered.
- The first episode is rumored to be released late 2020.
- Major characters will be presented with their own trailer.
- Exploration of the Materia and combat system will be done in detail.
What’s confirmed?
Kitase told Game Informer that there will be three separate games that will tell the story of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with each one set to have its own release dates.
“It will essentially be a full-scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In 13, each installment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense.”
Late 2020? Still a long way to go but at least there’s progress.
While waiting for the remake, why not add more to your list of anticipated games with news of the Final Fantasy 16? This is another title worth losing sleep over.
