iOS 10.3.1 Update Available With Better Security and New Features

TNH Staff · April 4, 2017 · Leave a Comment

After only a week from releasing iOS 10.3, Apple has also released an update, iOS 10.3.1, fixing some bugs and improving security issues of iPhone and iPad.

iOS 10.3 caused a minor set of problems, and Apple had to pull it from iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c. These two are Apple’s last models with a 32-bit processor. AppleInsider confirms that iOS 10.3.1 is able to fix those issues.

When you open a 32-bit app, Apple is planning to show a popup dialog box, as we already know that Apple dropped support for 32-bit apps. The box will emphasize that the app is not going to work with future versions of iOS, and that the app’s developer first needs to update it, in order to improve compatibility.

Apple’s security notes say that the new iOS 10.3.1 will be able to fix the Wi-Fi flaw that could have made possible for an attacker within an appropriate range “to execute arbitrary code on the Wi-Fi chip”. The problem was reported by Gal Beniamini from Google Project Zero.

The new features of iOS 10.3.1 include the following:

  • The rollout of APFS (Apple File System) on iOS devices;
  • Wi-Fi Calling on iCloud devices with Varizon;
  • New Find My AirPods service;
  • New Podcasts app widget;
  • Smoother app animations;
  • New iCloud Section;
  • A new Apple ID settings menu;
  • Maps app 3D Touch Quick Action feature, showing the weather forecast for present location.

Last but not least, developers can now respond to reviews.

To install iOS 10.3.1, simply connect to iTunes or download it from Software Update. It’s less than 30MB, so you don’t need much storage space. The compatible devices are iPHone 5 and later versions, iPad 4th generation and later versions and iPod 6th generation later versions.
