We can clearly say that the WhatsApp application is one of the most popular mobile messaging applications all over the world. There are over 200 million users that are using the WhatsApp application and this is the reason why the developers of the mentioned application are trying to focus their attention in this country.
According to new reports, WhatsApp will launch a digital payments service in India sometime in the following months. This news was firstly reported by local media, when a spokesperson for WhatsApp mentioning that the company wants to contribute more to India’s vision for digital commerce.
Unfortunately, it’s not sure what exactly WhatsApp will be offering to the users, but the move is not something unexpected, as we all know that mobile market in India is growing at a fast pace.
We remind you that Facebook has bought WhatsApp for $22 billion back in 2014 and since then the application has continued to grow in popularity and, according to the latest reports, now it has about 1.2 billion monthly active users. However, the company has to find a way to make some revenues out of the application after it has removed the $0.99 annual subscription fee back in 2016.
We can clearly say that WhatsApp is more popular than Facebook in India, and the messaging application has already “adapted” in this country for some other roles than just a way to keep in touch with your friends and family. We remind you that WhatsApp is being used in India to sell goods such as medicines, baby clothes, art and craft supplies etc.
In concordance with Reserve Bank of India, back in January 2016, digital payment services in India had more than 262 million transactions worth about $1.3 billion. The government reacted fast and it has also launched its own digital payments framework for digital payments and it has named it “Unified Payments Service,” allowing banks and mobile apps to exchange currency with ease.
In other words, WhatsApp has chosen the right time to get involved in this type of service in India, and we’re pretty sure that it will have a lot to win from this.
