Google Maps Instructions On Using It Manually Or By Voice Command On Android Wear Smartwatches

TNH Staff · April 11, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Here’s how to use Google Maps manually or by voice command on your Android Wear smartwatch.

With Android Wear 2.0, you can get turn-by-turn directions on your Android Wear smartwatch without a connection to your smartphone, if your smartwatch features GPS built-in.

The first and the most obvious step, if you want to use navigation on your watch, is to download the Google Maps on your smartwatch from the Play Store. If the device features GPS and Android Wear 2.0, you’ll be able to navigate without being connected to your phone. You’ll also be able to have the map always on with the ambient display.

What about if you’re using the older version of Android Wear? Well, the good news is that you can navigate on your smartwatch, if your phone is locked but also as long as its location is enabled.

Get directions by voice

  • Wake up your watch and say “Google…”
  • Say “navigate to [destination]…”
  • Say the transportation mode of your choice “…by [foot, bike, car…]
  • After the Google Maps card appears, you might still need more clarification of your destination.
  • Enjoy the turn-by-turn navigation.

Get directions manually

  • Open Google Maps on your smartwatch.
  • On the map, tap the desired destination.
  • Press the Navigate button which you’ll find at the bottom of the display.
  • If you swipe left, you’ll be able to see the destination of your choice and then swipe left again to change the mode of transportation – walking, riding a bike, driving. Then swipe again to close the menu and get going!

More Google Maps tips for Android Wear

  • Once you’re navigating, you’ll see a list with directions if you swipe on the green card from the bottom.
  • Swipe left if you want to see the time and distance left until you get to your destination.
  • If you want to mute the directions and to take a break from the full-screen navigation mode, swipe right. If you want to go back, tap on the blue arrow on the directions notification.
  • If you want to cancel the navigation, swipe the card up and tap Exit.

It’s pretty easy to get directions using your smartwatch whether you prefer getting them by using your voice or manually. Which alternative suits you best?
