WhatsApp Tagging Feature to Cause Problems

TNH Staff · September 21, 2016 · Leave a Comment

If your life was too quiet until now and you didn’t know what to do with it anymore, WhatsApp is currently taking care of this. As part of a new wave of changes the developers applied to the app, it seems that now you will have the option to tag someone in a group conversation. In order to do so, you have to type @ and then type the username of your friend. Then, they will receive a notification that they have been mentioned in a group chat.

This will happen even if the person has previously chosen not be a part of the group, which might prove to be really annoying in some cases. The downside is the fact that it will be difficult to ignore unwanted messages or annoying notifications and even spam chats. The bright side is that you will be updated on what’s happening in the group chats you’re interested in, even if you don’t have the time to follow the entire conversation at the moment.

Some say that this move is part of Facebook’s plan to monetize WhatsApp, but so far we don’t have enough proofs for that. The change is part of the 2.16.272 update that will start to roll out in the upcoming weeks. After you receive the update, you will receive notifications you cannot control, so pay attention to what group chats you’re in. This new feature is available for iOS and Android devices only, so desktop users still have control over what notifications they will receive from WhatsApp.

It remains to be seen whether users will appreciate this new feature or if they will despise it because of the unrequested notifications. Also, this leaves space for lots of pranks to be made to friends you want to tease or to enemies.
