Leaving Your WhatsApp Group Secretly Isn’t Possible, But Here’s Something Else You Can Do

TNH Online · April 14, 2018 · Leave a Comment

The slew of available online messaging services have taken communication to a whole other level. It has made it possible for people to talk to each other even when they are miles apart. Provided that both parties are equipped with reliable internet connection, they can communicate with each other in real time. Messaging apps have also sought to add a new dimension to chat messages and video calls by adding fun filters, personalized emojis, and doodles.

Undoubtedly, one of the most popular messaging apps today is the one they call WhatsApp. Statistics detailed in a Lifewire article put its user base at “beyond half a billion people and it is still growing.”

Now, WhatsApp isn’t without its kinks and access to it isn’t entirely free. Still, it has remained a fixture in many a smartphone because over the years it continues to be easy to use.

While one-on-one messaging is its forte, this app also has a group messaging feature. While this is a neat way to get updates on your high school reunion or next family picnic, there are instances when you’d rather not be part of the conversation altogether.

Of course, the easy way is to just leave the conversation. As an app user, you can easily find the “Leave Group” option. Sadly, there isn’t a foolproof way to secretly do this. The next best thing would be to enable the “Mute” option.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Start by tapping on the WhatsApp app icon. It should resemble a white phone receiver on a green speech bubble.
  2. Tap the CHATS tab. It’s at the top of the screen. This will open a list of your current conversations.
  3. Look for the group conversation you want to mute. On your device, the group name should be conveniently located in the upper-left side of the screen.
  4. Tap on the group name to get to the conversation’s settings page. Select Mute from the options provided.
