Samsung’s latest mid-range device, the Galaxy A5 (2017), is based on the company’s current main device, the Galaxy S7. Let’s compare the two and see which is worthier of your pocket!
Design & build quality
Regarding the design, the two devices are quite similar. Galaxy A5 measures 146.1 x 71.4 x 7.9 mm and the S7 is 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm. They share the same premium look, the same positioning of the buttons, the same microSD card slot, and both of their finishes are great. The difference is that the loud speaker from S7’s bottom edge is placed on A5’s right-hand side to provide users a better video and gaming experience.
Both devices have the fingerprint reader on the Home button and the mini-jack on the bottom edge; they also boast IP68 certifications, being equally protected against dust and water.
Display
A5’s screen of 5.2-inches is slightly bigger than S7’s one which measures 5.1-inches and the Korean company used Super AMOLED on both devices. The S7 has higher res (1,400 x 2,560 pixels) and the A5 is Full-HD (1,080 x 1920). Both of their screens have maximum brightness, but if you want to use your phone for VR, pick the S7.
Software
S7 comes with Nougat, but A5 was unfortunately released with Android 6.0.1. TouchWiz works great in both cases, and the UX is also sleek.
Performance
Choose S7 if you want the most powerful option: Exynos 8890 octa-core processor (4 processors with 2.3 GHz and 4 with 1.6 GHz), 4 GB RAM, graphics provided by Mali T880 MP12 chip. The S5 uses Exynos 7880 octo-core processor (14 nm processing), 3 GB RAM, and a Mali T830 MP3 chip. They both have 32 GB of internal memory.
Camera
The S7 has a 12-megapixel back camera, f/1.7 aperture with dual pixel tech and the front camera is 5-megapixel, f/1.7 aperture. The A5 has a 16-megapixel camera, f/1.9 aperture on both the front and the back. S7 takes better photos, though thanks to its dual pixel technology.
Battery
The both models sport a 3000 mAh battery, but S7 has a slightly inferior battery life, due to the fact that it has QHD definition, unlike the A5 which has Full-HD definition.
All in all, the Galaxy S7 is superior to its latest brother in almost all categories, but if you don’t treasure performance and photo potential too much, than the Galaxy A5 is a great option for you.
